Bill specialises in and heads the team dealing with contentious intellectual property, defamation and media work in both the High Court and other Regulatory bodies. Much of his work involves the internet and e-commerce issues. Bill is the author of a well-received practitioners’ work on High Court practice and procedure, and has lectured extensively. He is a former Chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Authority’s Local Advisory Committee on Radio, being the youngest Chairman ever to serve.

• Acting for Cotton Traders Limited in successfully resisting legal action brought by Nike and the Rugby Football Union regarding the right to use the Red Rose of England in what has become the leading case regarding the use of national badges
• Acting for major independent software distributor in defending £20 million parallel importing claim made by Microsoft Corporation and in a number of other similar cases brought by Microsoft against software distributors in the UK
• Actions in general in respect of parallel imports and grey market goods
• A challenge to the Heelys patent
• Acting for major public sector consultancy company in relation to the copyright in its reports to local authorities
• Acting for major advertising and marketing company in relation to the copyright of their publicity posters for a major British horror/comic movie in 2008
• Acting for major communications company in successfully defending to rights in its portfolio of domain names challenged by major German company
• Advising a major US corporation in relation to its advertising campaign in the UK
• Advising major US company in relation to the technology rights in its formulations for lubrication oil in the UK

Bill has further conducted successful litigation in the Patents Court. More generally, he has been involved in cases of legal importance in the sphere of company and trust law.

Background

Bill is a "Leader in his Field" for both Intellectual Property and Media in Chambers Directory 2009. He studied at Oxford University and was called to the Bar and practised as a Barrister in Manchester for six years before re-qualifying as a solicitor in 1986. In addition, he is an Associate Member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys and is a CEDR Accredited Mediator and is a member of CEDR’s National Helpline Mediation Panel.
