Derek obtained BSc Honours degree in Anatomy and Human Physiology at Liverpool University before studying law. He qualified as a solicitor in 2003 with Walker Smith Way Solicitors in Chester where amongst many other cases he assisted in mounting the successful defence of former royal butler Paul Burrell. Since moving to to Pannone in 2004 he has built a successful Road Traffic Offence Defence practice. Pannone LLP recognised his success and accompanying client satisfaction in this and other areas nominating him for the North West Young Professional of the Year award 2008 where he won the Outstanding Contribution award. He was subsequently appointed a senior associate.
Specialisation
In addition to applying his Road Traffic expertise to both both businesses and individuals, he defends VOSA prosecutions, DVLA licence revocations and assists transport businesses in dealings with the Transport Commissioner such as operator licence applications.
Derek also specialises in Product Safety matters assisting business compliance with their regulatory obligations and where necessary defending/avoiding prosecutions by regulators including amongst others Trading Standards, Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). He represents both UK and USA based businesses in this capacity.
Continuing with his early interest in Medicine, Derek holds the ABPI (Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry) qualification and is a member of the Inquest Lawyers Group (ILG). He has assisted Medical Professionals including Pharmacists and Doctors at Inquests and with General Medical Council (GMC) disciplinary Tribunals and appeals. Derek played a significant role in the Inquest in to the death of Dr Harold Shipman.
