Richard specialises in serious personal injury cases including head and spinal injury claims, child abuse cases, aviation and maritime accidents, claims against the Ministry of Defence and actions under the Human Rights Act.
Richard’s clients include those who have suffered serious head, spinal and amputation injuries, victims of sexual and physical abuse and assaults (whether as children or adults) and other criminal injuries, including torture, false imprisonment and terrorist attacks. As head of our Disability Rights Unit Richard acts in public law, judicial review and community care law cases for individuals suffering discrimination by reason of disability.
In addition to winning multi-million pound awards for victims of serious head, spinal and amputation injuries Richard has acted in many high profile and landmark cases particularly for victims of child abuse and injured service personnel.
Richard is a Fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, a member of the Law Society Personal Injury Panel and sits on the Legal Services Commission North West Area Appeals Committee. Richard is also a member of the management committee of South Manchester Law Centre and a co-founder and executive committee member of the Association of Child Abuse Lawyers (ACAL).
Richard is the co-author (with Elizabeth-Anne Gumbel QC and Malcolm Johnson) of the book ‘Child Abuse Compensation Claims’ (Law Society Publications 2002), a contributor to ‘Personal Injury: Law, Practice and Precedents’ (APIL/Jordans 2006) and has had many articles published in the legal press.
Richard has appeared on radio and TV in relation to many of his cases, including BBC and ITV National news, ‘Newsnight’, Radio 4 ‘Today’ and ‘PM’ programs, Radio 4’s ‘Law in Action’ and international media including CNN and Al-Jazeera.
Richard qualified with Pannone in 1994 and became a Partner in 1998 and head of Personal Injury in 2009.
