Position: PartnerStephen is a Partner in the Clinical Negligence department and deals with a broad range of claims but has a particular interest in cases of cerebral palsy and other maximum severity injuries.
He has secured many awards in excess of £1m with cases of particular note being awards of £3.4m and £3.25 for children with cerebral palsy. He has acted for many high profile clients including the family of Robbie Fowler, the former England footballer, and for Denise Hendry, the wife of the former Scotland football captain Colin Hendry. The settlement he secured for Mrs Hendry was the highest award made in a cosmetic surgery case in England.
He is a member of both the Law Society Clinical Negligence Specialist Panel and the Action for Victims of Medical Accidents (AVMA) Specialist Solicitors' Panel and was named as one of the leading clinical negligence lawyers in the northwest in the 2007-2008 edition of "Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession".
Stephen also has a specific interest in Inquiry work and in June 2007 was appointed Solicitor to the Redfern Inquiry into tissue sampling in UK nuclear facilities which is expected to report in December 2008. That Inquiry relates to retention of organs following post-mortem examinations, an issue which Stephen also addressed when Solicitor to the Royal Liverpool Children's Inquiry (the Alder Hey Inquiry) which reported in January 2001. Those Inquiries add to the experience Stephen gained when representing more than 100 patients at the high security Ashworth Hospital in the Fallon Inquiry which reported in 1999.
Stephen also deals with associated health care issues and in Re VC represented a 16 year old anorexic girl in an application brought by a Trust for permission to force feed by way of nasogastric tube.
